ROADS AND STREETS IN OLD PLYMOUTH - A-Z INDEX

BRETON SIDE

The second-hand shop of Mr F R Matthews was at number 41 Bretonside, then all one word.

Known variously as Brittayne side (1604); Bittons Side (1765); Briton Side (1812 and 1820); Breton Side (modern).

What is today called Breton Side originally ran eastwards from Martyn's Gate, at the eastern end of Lower Broad Street, to Hawk Street, although by 1820 the stretch between Old Tree, otherwise Great Tree, otherwise, Old Penny Lane, and later still North Street, to Hawk Street, had been renamed Exeter Street and Hawk Street had become Higher Street.

In 1604 the Mayor, Walter Matthews, built a new conduit by the Great Tree at Brittayne side at his own cost and charges.
