THEATRES AND CINEMAS IN OLD PLYMOUTH

THEATRE ROYAL IV

Plymouth's fourth and current Theatre Royal is situated in Royal Parade.

Work began on April 1st 1979 and it was completed on April 16th 1982.  The Theatre Royal was officially opened by HRH the Princess Margaret on Wednesday May 5th 1982.  Also present was the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Mr Ralph Morrell.

After a fanfare from the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, actor Mr Leonard Rossiter made an opening speech.  Also in the openig show were Mr Dickie Henderson; Miss Iris Williams; the Melody Attlas Dancers; Mr Keith Harris and Orville; Miss Galina Samsova and Mr David Ashmole from the Royal Ballet; Miss Diane Montague from the Royal Opera House; and the Massed Bands of Her Majesty's Royal Marines.  Topping the bill was Mr Gene Pitney.

The Theatre was designed by Mr Peter Moro in conjunction with theatre consultant Mr Martin Carr.  The construction was carried out by Messrs Richard Costain Ltd.

It has seating for 400 in the Stalls, 368 in the Circle and 503 in the Gallery.  The Rank Strand Galaxy lighting and sound control system is sited at the rear of the Stalls.  The stage is over 12 metres wide and 8 metres high at its full extent.
