ROADS AND STREETS IN OLD PLYMOUTH - A-Z INDEX

BUTCHERS' LANE

Butchers' Lane ran eastwards from Old Town, later Old Town Street, in 1765.  It ended at the junctions with Norley Lane and Higher Broad Street, the highway itself continuing as Lower Broad Street.  Although it was still shown on John Cooke's map of the Borough of Plymouth dated 1820 as Butchers' Lane it was already known as Treville Street in "The Picture of Plymouth" trade directory of 1812.

Whitfeld tells us in his "Plymouth and Devonport in Times of War and Peace" that: 'At the bottom was the Butchers' Arms, a great resort for farmers of inordinate drinking capacity'.
