GWR TRAIN HEADCODES
A - Express Passenger Train, Express Newspaper Train or Express Diesel Car, Breakdown Van Train going to clear the line, or Light Engine going to assist disabled train, or empty Coaching stock train timed at Express Passenger speed.
B - Ordinary Passenger train, Mixed train, or Breakdown Van train not going to clear the line. Branch Passenger train. Auto train or Diesel Car.
C - Parcels, Fish, Meat, Fruit, Milk, Horse, Cattle, or Perishable train, composed entire ly of Vacuum-fitted Stock, with the vacuum pipe connected to engine, also Express Parcels Diesel Car. Express Freight, Livestock, Perishable, or Ballast train partly vacuum-fitted, with not less than one-third vacuum-braked vehicles connected by vacuum pipe to engine. Parcels Diesel Car (local or stopping service).
D - Express Freight or Ballast train complying with the instructions in regard to Freight trains conveying a stipulated number of vacuum-braked vehicles (not less than 4 connected by vacuum pipe to engine (see tables on page 173 of General Appendix,) and authorised to run at a maximum speed of 35 mph. Empty Coaching Stock train not specially authorised to carry A head lamps.
E - Express Freight, fish, meat, fruit or cattle train (not conveying Class 1 traffic, or other traffic specially prohibited), or Ballast train, not running under C or D head lamp conditions, or special train conveying 36-ton Breakdown crane not proceeding to an accident.
F - Through fast Freight train not running under C, D or E head lamp conditions, conveying Through load.
G - Light Engine or Light Engines coupled together, or Engine and Brake.
H - Freight, Mineral or Ballast train of empties carrying Through load to destination.
J - Through Freight, Mineral or Ballast train stopping at intermediate stations.
K - Ordinary Freight, Mineral or Ballst train stopping at local stations. Branch freight. Pilot trip (Unless shown in Service Time Table to carry superior head lamps.).
