ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Lourdes is situiated in Vacarage Road at Plympton, Plymouth.
It was built as a memorial to Bishop John Joseph Keily, who was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Plymouth from 1911 until his death on September 23rd 1928. The foundation stone was laid in October 1931.
The Church was consecrated on Wednesday September 25th 1935 by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Plymouth, the Right Reverend John Patrick Barrett. The ceremony began at 7am, when the Bishop commenced walking around the outside of the Church, sprinkling holy water over the ground and on the walls, and blessing them. He then knocked three times on the locked doors, which were opened by the deacon, Canon Jaynor. The Bishop then blessed the consecration crosses and consecrated the altar.
High Mass was celebrated at 11.30am, during which two monks from Buckfast Abbey and from Germany chanted the Psalms and responses and forty clergy sang music to the Mass.
