EDUCATION IN OLD PLYMOUTH

CHANTRY SCHOOL

It is alleged that local historian Mr R N Worth found a reference in a document dated 1507 to 'James the schoolmaster', which was thought to refer to a Chantry School founded in the time of King Henry VII (reigned 1485-1509).  This would have been attached to Saint Andrew's Church or, possibly, to Plympton Priory.

This School may have evolved into the Corporation Grammar School, which was founded in 1561, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.  No evidence has yet been found to prove this theory and the account of the founding of the Corporation Grammar School suggests it was formed from scratch rather than a continuation of a previous establishment.
